Family Literacy

Intensive English-language classes are a core service for new immigrants.

The Lower East Side has always been a community of new immigrants; thus the Literacy Program has always been at the core of our services. We offer intensive English classes in which approximately 300 adults, from many different countries and at all ability levels, learn to read, speak and write in English each year. At the same time, our multilingual, multicultural staff provides a practical introduction to American life, helping students gain a foothold in their new home.

Technology Center

Students also spend several hours each week in our state-of-the-art Technology Center allowing for even more individualized instruction. They use a wide variety of educational software—including the very latest in voice recognition programs to improve their pronunciation and fluency. They can also mine the Internet for information, engage in e-mail correspondence, and gain fundamental, job-ready computer skills. Finally, there are special workshops for parents, teaching them how to support their children's education through reading, helping with homework, sharing information with teachers, and taking on the challenges of raising children in a foreign culture.
