After-School Programs
After-School Studies

Elementary school children have a choice of four different after-school programs throughout the neighborhood, three housed at local public schools, the other at the Settlement's own home on Eldridge Street. In addition, University Settlement recently expanded our reach by establishing programs at four new sites in Brooklyn.  Close to 1,000 children take part in these programs -- free of charge -- five afternoons a week, even during school holidays and vacations.

All of our after-school programs emphasize literacy and education, providing homework help, tutoring, and the opportunity to use reading and writing as tools for exploration. In addition, we offer a range of enriching experiences, including music, dance, drama, visual arts, sports, recreation, community service, and many special events  -- as well as a nutritious dinner  -- each and every day.

Beacon Program

University Settlement's year-round Beacon Program helps hone reading, writing, and language skills.

Services at the Beacon include a complete after-school program for elementary school children, tutoring, homework help, and art therapy, as well as a comprehensive teen program which provides college preparation and counseling, leadership development, creative arts classes and workshops, organized athletics, English classes, and special events and workshops. The Beacon also provides day programs for children during the winter, mid-winter, spring and summer recesses. All services at the Beacon are free of charge.

Summer Camp
Bronx Zoo Field TripA fun-filled field trip to the Bronx Zoo!

Every summer, University Settlement operates three dynamic day camps for elementary-age children who would otherwise have few opportunities for a meaningful summer vacation. One is at our home site on Eldridge Street, one is at P.S. 137 at 293 East Broadway, and the other is at our Beacon School Program on East 12th Street.

These dynamic and fun-filled camps integrate diverse on-site program that includes academics, arts, athletics and lots of special events, with a full itinerary of field trips that allows children to experience the tremendous resources that New York City has to offer. All three programs are carefully constructed to respond to the specific developmental needs of children as they move through their elementary years. Many of the campers attend our after-school programs during the school year, allowing for continuity of both staff and content. Children are also served a full, nutritious breakfast and lunch.
