6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
On October 23, 2003, University Settlement hosted Lower East Side Looks at the Angel Orensanz Foundation Center for the Arts.
Two-hundred and fifty socially-active and influential supporters of
University Settlement were in attendance to celebrate 117 years of
exceptional service to the Lower East Side and to honor Speaker of the
New York State Assembly, Sheldon Silver. Silver, a longtime resident of the Lower East Side, has been a tireless advocate and supporter for the community and for
University Settlement, was presented with the Charles B. Stover Award. Gail B. Nayowith, Executive Director of the Citizens' Committee for Children of New York, Inc. presented the award.
In addition to the award presentation, highlights of the evening included live Latin music by Sonido Isleño and a breathtaking runway fashion show by Victor de Souza.
An internationally acclaimed designer, de Souza has dressed stars
including Mary J. Blige, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Nicole Kidman. His
designs have been featured in Vellum, Elle, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar,
among other publications. Spearheading the evening's culinary fare was
the Food Network's Aarón Sanchez, acclaimed chef and third-generation
cookbook author.
Guests also enjoyed a silent auction, as well as a live auction commandeered by Samir Sharma of Christie's.
