    Position:

    Licensed School Based Social Worker

    Overview

    University Settlement provides a comprehensive network of services to over 10,000 people of all ages living in the Lower East Side. Its broad network of activities includes adult literacy classes, mental health counseling and intensive case management; group and family day care; support services to the formerly homeless; after-school and summer camp for children and teens; a senior center and a credit union.

    Under the direction of the School Principal and Clinical Director at PS 636 (280 Hart Street Bklyn, NY), the school-based social worker will provide services to elementary school students (grades k through 5th) and their families using various social work methods, including individual, group and family counseling. The social worker will collaborate with coordinators of an existing after-school enrichment program where psychosocial services and crisis intervention may be required.

    Responsibilities:
    • Participates with interdisciplinary team members in developing and implementing program policies and procedures
    • Provides direct counseling/social services to students referred by self, faculty, administration and other school ancillary staff
    • Assesses the social and emotional needs of patients (students, participants, members)
    • Tracks and follows up on all referrals made in and out of school
    • Coordinates social work services and patient referrals between the program and other agencies providing social and educational services in both the school and local community
    • Establishes referral network/linkages with outside agencies for both students and parents
    • Makes presentations for outreach and to inform school community of the mental health services
    • Serves as an advocate for patients' rights within the school and as a mediator between parents, child and school
    • Remains available for crisis intervention social work as the need arises or arranges for such coverage by emergency social services
    • Records professional assessments, identifies problems, treatment plans and progress notes as required by NYSOMH regulations, policies and procedures and the Agency
    • Attends all scheduled clinical meetings for Pupil Personnel Team
    • Ensures that all patients, (students, participants, members) visitors, guests, as well as co-workers, receive personalized, prompt attention
    • Participates in the planning and implementation of after-school program and activities
    • Performs other related duties, as required
    Qualifications:
    • Master's degree and LMSW required, LCSW preferred
    • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred
    • Three years+ of clinical experience in a mental health setting preferred
    • Ability to engage and diffuse crisis situations
    • Ability to work effectively with children, families, professionals and other personnel from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds
    • Experience with time limited treatment approaches preferred
    • Experience with treating children preferred
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    Salary:

    Up to mid 50s, plus generous benefits package

    Hours:

    35 hours per week
